George
Gabauer, CD '94, is a retired math teacher and avid canoeist who
blends some 35 years of outdoor photography in his exhibit theme,
"City/Wilderness." Over the years he has given frequent slide
presentations on wilderness canoeing at Sierra club events, REI, and
Northern Illinois University Outdoor Education Symposiums. He also has
been serving the Cliff Dwellers as an unofficial club photographer,
recording highlights of various program events. He takes delight in finding that bit of wilderness and nature in the nooks and crannies of the city and suburbs, but similarly enjoys the wonders of the water regions of the Northland. One of his most memorable moments outdoors was the mystical encounter he had with a lynx while paddling along a remote bit of Lake Superior shoreline. Two pictures from that tete-a-tete are included in this exhibition. An advocate of technology, he recently adopted the tools of the digital darkroom. Using software programs such as Photoshop, Painter and Studio Artist, he applies their professional capabilities to enhance some images, modify others, or create digital art. |
